Default WD40 o.k. for cleaning chain?/KLR250 offer?

I ran out of spray chain cleaner (Bel Ray) and my local Kawasaki dealer claims that he's not familiar with any products of this variety (?!). Will using WD40 to clean off any gunk before hitting it with chain lube damage the o-rings?

The same dealer also has a new 2005 KLR250 sitting in the show room (it's been there for about a year) - it's dusty and kind of sad just sitting there. I was thinking about making an offer for it (get that low-rate financing and pay it off quickly). What do you guys think would be a reasonable offer? If I remember correctly, the list price was $4200. Since the KLX250 is now available and assuming that noone else wants the KLR, I was thinking $3500 out the door. What do you think?
