Went for a 100 Km ride in the cold 3 C (40 F)... Nothing like a good ride in the crisp cold weather, it felt GREAT. The ridin' season will soon be over in this part of Canada since by law, all passenger vehicules (motorcycles included), must be equipped with WINTER tires from December 15 to March 15.

I will not be running on winter tires... whenever we'll start to get snow accumulation (or December 15th - the winter tire law deadline), I will be parking the bike for winter! By the way... does anybody know of any winter tires for bikes? Do they even exist? Cheers.

Sure. What most cheap KLR riders do is screw car tire suds into regular tires. Look here. You can buy studded motorcycle tires I think but I don't have a link.

I wish I could! This winter tire law in the province of Quebec is relatively new, it came into effect only last winter (08/09)... and it specifies that WINTER TIRES are "tires on which the icon representing a mountain with a superimposed snowflake appears"! Legally I cannot drive/ride on "mud/snow" tires - or "all season tires" during the winter months anymore... Good law for cages, but kinda sucks for bikes! During the winter of 07/08 we didn't have snow here until after x-mas (first time in over 50 years). If that was to happen again, I would still have to park the bike on December 15th.

Forgot to attach the "mountain/snowflake" symbol which specifically designates WINTER TIRES on my previous post.

I installed SWMotech crash bars (already had a JNS skid plate) and rode a few hundred miles to test it all out!

Pressure washed the last of the Oklahoma mud from the bike and then rode it over to the Kawasaki shop. They were cooking ribs out on a grill in the parking lot. Too bad I couldn't stay for that. Smelled great.
I'm having it serviced and everything looked at. We did about 1,850 miles through Alabama and Mississippi to get to Arkansas and then did about half of Oklahoma before the rain and mud did us in on this part of the Trans America Trail. After frying a clutch out in Bartlesville, OK I was told to have another oil change in the next 5-600 miles to be sure we get all the little pieces out of the engine, so they are doing a full service. It was almost 950 miles since then before I got home. The bike is backfiring when you down shift and I know I probably need a new set of sprockets and chain. The rear brakes are weak and probably something else. The bike has 8,656 miles on it now and it's about 10 months old. Probably 75% has been on dirt and the TAT. Thank goodness for the Tee Pee Iii seat I got off a member here on the site, my butt never hurt at all on this trip. We'll see in a couple of days what else needs fixing on the bike. Here are a few pics of the bike in the Oklahoma Mud. They need to stop looking for the Alians out at Area 51 cause they are coming down and making this mud at night in Oklahoma.

Brings back memories - that's where I grew up. Not exactly the cosmopolitan center of the universe, but was a very nice place to spend my youth (70s and 80s).
As far as what I did to my KLR today - actually had to put a tiny amount of WD-40 in the ignition keyswitch - my key had been seriously sticking and not wanting to slide in or come out easily. Seems kind of odd to have to do on a brand new bike - even if I have been parking it outside for 8 to 10 hours in the rain every work day. Keyswitch works perfectly now. Also tried to modify a bicycle handlebar map holder (foldout kind with velcro) to work on the KLR's handlebars - FAIL. Probably will look at a small magnetic tank bag with map holder.

I had to do the same thing today. (And mine rarely sits outdoors.)

Today I installed a Thermobob, put in new coolant(obviously), installed tusk fender bag, tusk aluminum handguards, tusk mitts(like hippo hands), and a tubular rear rack. Also ground away a relief in my skidplate so I can adjust my Doo without removing it.

Today, I re-greased my steering head bearings, made sure it was all tight. while my front fairing was off, i straightened out my headlight sub frame.
drained my fork oil, flushed the forks, put fresh 15w oil in, put my progressive springs in the right way (the dealership that did my for seals a while back put them in upside down), added larger spacers, put the forks back on the bike and got it all buttoned up. learned that i need new front brake pads.... really bad. took my 14t sprocket off, put a 16t on... figured out it was the wrong 16t, put my good 16t on, cleaned my chain in preparation for the 400 mile ride next sunday. figured out where a mystery squeak was coming from and remedied the situation with a few pieces of old vinyl flooring. very productive day and i even got the garage cleaned organized once i was done. |

Flogged it through 100 miles of mud and water. Just to keep her running I wiped the mud off the mirrors.
