At http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/D...64/page32.html
is a brief discussion of the Rifle and Clearview windshields. But there's also a discussion of using a National Cycle handlebar-mounted windshield... --------------------- start paste ---------- The other option for additional wind protection is to supplement the current windscreen with a handlebar mount unit. I have seen this on both the KLR650 and the Tengai and believe it would be a no-brainer for the KLX650. I had a full sized National Cycle Plexi-fairing on my KLR600 for winter riding and a small National Cycle Street Shield on my Suzuki DR650. Both had quick release hardware and could be removed easily for offroad riding. The KLR650 and the Tengai would both need a shield that has no lowers like the Street Shield while the KLX could use a full style like the Plexi-Fairing. ---------------------- end paste ------ I see that the National Cycle web site shows a number of options for the KLR 650 if you search by model--- but the pictures illustrating the shields are not of KLRs. Does anyone have any pictures of any of these mounted on a KLR? Or any experience with any of them on a KLR? -Denny 04 KLR 03 Concours |

I had a nat cycle fairing on my old klr600 (no stock fairing to get in the way like the KLR) but haven't tried nat cycle on the 650. I contacted Nat cycle once and the person I talked to said that their shields might not fit properly on the 650 due to the OE fairing...
I have run (and still do run sometimes) a slipstreamer handlebar mounted windshield, the CF-30. I think I paid 60 bucks for it. It mounts up fine, no clearance problems with the instruments or stock fairing. http://www.klr650.net/archives/mania.../shieldweb.jpg http://www.klr650.net/archives/mania...shieldweb2.jpg http://www.klr650.net/archives/mania...eous/dash1.jpg I'm pretty sure you could get the smaller nat cycle ones on without problems (regardless of what they say). Make sure the one you get has no lower mounting. I think they make one called the street shield that might fit the bill. Maier also makes some that might work: http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/...&storeId=10101 This place has the slipstreamer for 45 bucks: http://www.accwhse.com/slipstre.htm scroll down to universal windshields, it is the Cf-30. Of course, any shield that takes the wind off you will be a liability in the dirt. It will bang around, you will bang into it, it won't allow you to sit far forward, etc... Hope this helps. Oh, and make sure to keep connies battery charged while you ride the klr around everywhere. ![]()

Thanks, Ian!
Here's the response from National Cycle in my email today: -------------- Denny, We don't have pictures of those shields on a KLR 650. They should fit the later models since as you say, there have been almost no changes to the bike in it's long life. Why mess with a good thing? Thanks, Caryl, NC --------------- Your pix are great, however, in helping me visualize what it would look like. THANKS! Re: the Connie: I see you have a similar challenge. My Connie still has its uses, though. I enjoyed the fairing this morning-- it was 28 degrees when I left the house for work. A nit bippy for the KLR. -Denny PS- J'aime des motos aussi. Tous terrains toujours! |

(maybe someday!)

Ian--- OK, mon ami, here's the scoop. I can read French well enough to get the gist of it but generally take anything over a sentence or two to my wife, Francoise. But in this case I thought I'd try freetranslation.com. Here's what came back:
"Excuse me if my French is poor. I am not well student. Thus, will you sell the Competition? I seriously thought about to sell mine thus I would have the money to put in the KLR. But I realized that this would be a big error to sell it. The competitions is a very good bike, and I appreciate mine. As for the coming from windshield, she is the better one for expérimenter and to see this that works for you. I think that if you employ the competitions for a longer road climbs, you need not a big screen on the KLR. Ian <does not speak really French!! (Maybe someday!) " Hilarious! The combination of your protestations about your French and the butcher-job by the automated translator is priceless! And I do truly appreciate your advice about perhaps not needing a windshield on the KLR if I use the "Competitions" (literal translation of 'Concours') for my longer trips. I think what I really need to do is just get more time on the KLR before deciding anything. I only have 500 miles on it so far. As for selling the Concours to support my newly-acquired KLR habit, well, here's what I told wifey when she asked why I needed another bike when I already have the Concours--- "But, Sweetie, it's just like having a wife and a girlfriend.... two different purposes!" I think she was mumbling something about the male mid-life crisis as she walked away shaking her head. -Denny |

I can't write/read French. I used a translator (google I think). I thought it would be worth a chuckle. Apparently you got the general idea of my message. Wouldn't want to depend on the google translator in any sort of serious situation, though!
I keep thinking of all the farkling I could do to the KLR if I sold connie, but then I think of why I bought the connie in the first place, because I was tired of the KLR on long freeway/high speed runs. No power and basically no wind protection, at highway speeds. If I ever put my concours up for sale on the board, could someone knock some sense into me please? thanks.
