Hey everyone, Newby here. I have a 93 KLX650 and was hoping someone could answer a riddle for me.
SYMPTOMS: Radiator is empty, Oil sight glass shows a very small white milkyness to the oil floating at top(tiny amount). No coolant leaks that I can see anywhere. Runs fine though, plenty of power. Oil also smells like it has gas in it. Are there any ways to REALLY find out for sure if the head gasket is cracked, ways to test it before I tear the engine apart only to find out it's not the gasket?? Was recently bought for $1000 with 8,000 miles on it. Previous owner said he had tank and carbs cleaned and serviced because gas would leak out of carb and also into engine when sitting. Starts right up, idles perfectly and runs great. So I believe he's telling the truth about the carb service. LAST QUESTION: What oil should I use for oil changes?? Any info will be helpful, THANKS! |

You won't see that sort of leak, it is most definately a head gasket leaking coolant (high pressure side) to oil passage (low pressure side) internally. Also, a remote possibility of the water pump seal leaking out the back side and into the motor. Either of those are hard to tell from the other without tearing stuff apart. A coolant leak-down test will just reveil that you have a loss of pressure somewhere.. Get a book, it's not hard to do, just time consuming. Once everything is apart, have the head checked for straightness and cracks, and the top surface of the jug to see if the liner is still level with the casting. The gas is either a bad needle/seat, or incorrect float level, either of which will not allow the flow of gas to stop when full. The gas overflows down the carb, into the cylinder and down past the rings into the crankcase (and sometimes into the air cleaner).

I once owned a 1993 KLX650C.
A common fault with these bikes is that the shaft in the water pump (about 2" long) wears out and has to replaced. This fault usually appears in bikes at about 43,000 kms. The shaft can be replaced by a home mechanic. |
