Default SgtMarty Colorado KLR tech day September 2014

Okay, I'm getting pestered again, so it's time to set a date for the next KLR tech day.

I'm aiming at the first Saturday, September 6th, 2014 for the tech day.

Chime in if that works or doesn't work. Majority wins.

SgtMarty dot com for more details.

Hey guys, I'm really hoping I'll be able to join. I just got my KLR a few weeks ago and I want to do the doo and much much more, but I have to admit my wrenching experience has so far maxed out around oil/filter changes and chain adjustments I'm wondering about some "tech-day etiquette". Do people ever come to these shin-digs with little more than beer(or $) and a desire to learn and get some help with the bike?

You don't need to know anything; you will learn a lot here. Just stop in and watch if you want. Bring your bike and parts and we will set you up with someone to help you through your projects.

You're welcome to bring beer, snacks, or donations, but it's not necessary.

In fact, that's pretty much what Tech Days are for, those with know how helping and teaching those without.
And yes, we all appreciate the "Barter" system of the Tech Day. It isn't necessary, but greatly appreciated.
Wrenching, snacks, beer and joking around. Doesn't get better than that!

Saturdays are tough, Sundays are better, but I might be able to make it in the afternoon. How late do you go?

We stay busy into the afternoons. Sometimes into the night...

Sundays are better for some people, but Saturdays are better for most, sorry.

No need to apologize. What do you need in the way of tools? Anything in particular that's handy to have extra of?

SgtMarty is the one who knows for sure, but as far as I can tell I think we're pretty well stocked with tools. We often find we've lost sockets at the end of a tech day - especially the popular sizes - so if you have old spares lying around, feel free to donate them :-)

Sounds good, how do I get there?
.. and since our KLRs are not registered yet, is the road paved enough for Goldwings?

SgtMarty dot com has details and directions, Terri. Roads are great for the Wings.

Sort-of.. we are living in the RV outside of the old cabin (with the outhouse). The start of the new house construction, next door, started waaaay late and now we are waiting on the well diggers (they broke their rig). We have a foundation hole, but the contrete folks can't start until the well digger rig is done and gone

This week, we get the KLRs out of storage and start the registration process (from CA to CO).

It's only money

Terri, take the Wings east on C470, south on US85 to Sedalia, south on 67 a mile or so, then south on 105 to the entrance to the Perry Park neighborhood. Much nicer ride--and shorter--than taking the interstate highways the whole way.

The Colonel will have his GPS hummin' !

Too bad there's no way to get from Deckers to you (via Pine Junction), that would be sweet!

There most certainly is!

67 has a steep dirt section from north of Deckers to the Sprucewood Inn, where it's pavement again to Sedalia. The dirt section can be wash-boardy at times, but I've done it on the Valk with no problem.

It's a zig-zag to go south from Pine Junction to Deckers then north to Sedalia then south on 105 to my place, but it's a great ride.

I think I'll reserve that for a KLR ride, I'm quite cautious on my F6B since I can't get both my feet down (854 vs. 130 lbs). Besides, with all this rain, it's probably a cut up mess.

Hey guys, I think I already know the answer to this. But as a guy with a lot to learn, it never hurts to ask. I am hoping I can make it down to the tech day if only just to watch and learn. Money limits which projects to tackle first.

Been hearing a noise around 4 or 5k rpm mainly in 2nd gear (buzzing). Could be nothing. Could be something. And I just want to keep my bike happy so i'm happy.

Thinking about trying to scrape money together to replace chain and sprockets at tech day. On the other hand, since I have no idea if that's the issue, i'm always tempted to save up and take it to an overpriced mechanic for peace of mind. Should I just hold off on shelling out the big bucks until I get down the tech day and see if one of you fine folk can point out something obvious to me? Thanks in advance

Hey Brian, can you take some pics and let us see the condition of the sprockets? Does the chain get loose quickly after tightening it? These answers might help us determine what is needed.
If you do need new drive components, I highly recommend Rocky Mountain ATV and their "Primary Drive" kit for the KLR, less than $100 delivered
