Default Flat tire in near Leadville

I had an incredible ride from Boulder to Crested Butte, and from Crested Butte to Apen, and was continuing home when I got a flat front tire After a super expensive tow ride, the bike is now sitting in Leadville.

Tire says "tubeless" and air is leaking out of spokes, so i assumed I had a major problem. Now I am reading more and realizing there may still be a tube in there? I really hope that it's just the tube that is flat.

Anyway, I need to get back to my bike in Leadville and fix it and get'r home. I'm wondering if anyone lives nearby who would be willing to help? Or any advice is also greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi, hit me up.
If we can agree on a day, I can drive out and we can fix your flat. Just bring a tube or patches and maybe pay for some gas.
I got some tools.

ask previous owner whether the wheels were tubeless? if they were and air is coming out of spokes, then wheel is not good to be tubeless anymore.

did you see a nail in the tire? or what caused it to go flat?

but most likely its just a tube, still when changing make sure you check inside of the tire for anything pokey.

Couldn't find any punctures in the tire, only leaks seemed to be spokes and the intake valve. Previous owner hasn't gotten back to me but from what I've read it probably has a tube right? Sounds like its a big ordeal to modify KLR wheels to be tubeless, so it's hopefully just a tubeless tire with a busted tube inside.

Which I cant fix on my own so I am so grateful for the offers to help! KLR community never ceases to amaze me.

once you get the bike home, practice changing the tube.

youtube has thousands of videos, this site and others have thousands of threads.

once you practice a few times, in theory it takes 10-15 minutes.

if you need something tomorrow, get one from your local shops. maybe Co Powersports.

if you need to save some money, there are tons of online stores. even just Amazon works:

https://www.amazon.com/IRC-Heavy-Duty...torcycle+Tubes

get the Heavy Duty tube. in theory it works better than any cheapest tube.

Headed back out to install the wheel with a new tube in it

I have a 19mm socket for the axle nut. And the allen wrench I have isn't measured in mm, it just says 7/32? I think it is the one that fits but can't remember, anyone know if that is the same as the 6mm?

Been reading like crazy but I think that's all I need to reinstall correct? Also, it's not a terrible idea to tighten the pinch bolts without a torque wrench right? 15 ft lbs is probably about when it feels super snug hand tightened i'm thinking.

Thanks for all the help guys! Huge thanks to Orco59 for everything!

Bike is safely home where it belongs, and I'm a tad bit wiser.

Now who wants to go mess it up on some trails with me?!

Assistance is nice, but to put it quite very frankly, if you travel the backcountry alone, you MUST be independently capable.
A well thought out set of tools for breakdowns, and an emergency kit for those unexpected overnighters.
Knowledge of the machine and it's workings, and practice in non emergency settings with the tools that will be used in those emergencies, and MOST problems will be avoided.(and a well practiced program of preventative maintenance)
But every now and then Ol' Murphy steps in and............................................... ........
Then there are those times when you remember that some people say that Murphy was an optimist!

I wish there was a KLR apprentice progrand haha. Sound advice. I'm adding to my toolkit slowly but still woefully incomplete. Next add on will be tube tools. I'll have to take these unexpected problems as they come since I just cannot stop riding.

I've been debating whether to attempt this same trip again to overcome it before next season. As for preventative maintenance I should probably pay up to take it to a mechanic for a check-up before trying for round 2, since (other than adding a tube change kit) I'd just be hoping for the best and hoping Murphy leaves me the hell alone.

Anyone know if county road 12 heading west out of Crested Butte is closed yet for the season? Or anyone think I'm an addle-brained masochist for thinking of trying this again? Better yet, anyone wanna join me?

Ya I've done it a couple times, pretty fun! Let me know if you still want to some time. The season just keeps going. I ended up doing the crested butte trip again with success! I'm going to post pics in the ride report.
