Default September 10, 2016 SgtMarty Colorado KLR Tech Day

September 10, 2016 for the next SgtMarty Colorado KLR Tech Day.

I've had three people bring their bikes here for some work in the last month, so it must be time for another tech day. Any bike is welcome. Riders, too.

SgtMarty dot com will be updated soon, and will have more details and information.

cfr, check to see (ask the previous owner) is the doohickey was upgraded, and if any other mods were done. Last valve check?

If you need to upgrade the doo lever, get it from Eagle Mike, just the doo and the torsion spring, and maybe the rotor bolt if you want to replace that (recommended). Nothing else needed.

If all that is good, yeah, just come and hang out with us.

Checked with previous owner. No dohickey. Will get kit doo, spring, and bolt from eagle mike. Looking at the guides for this, it is way over my head.

Thinking I should also take a look at the jets. Probably stock. What is recommended for 4000-1000 feet? (Moab to mountains) Which jet kit is preferred?

Thanks,
-Charles

cfr, we have had very few problems with pre '08 carbs at altitude, including riding to the top of Pikes Peak. Marty and I have been up there twice with large groups, never had an issue.
'08's and up have a different jetting set up, and can be problematic, but yours is probably good to go.

Two week notice on the next tech day at my place. Got at least a couple doo jobs coming in.

Also thinking about moving to a 14-tooth front sprocket as 1st gear isn't low enough for the steep hills (going either up or down). On the steepest hills on the trail, I stall on the uphill and skid the rear tire downhill with the rear brake because I'm going too fast in first gear trying to engine brake (in terror).

The rear has a 43 stamped on it, but I can't find markings on the front. I'm assuming that means it is the stock 15-tooth. My bike does 55 mph in 3rd gear at 5500 RPM. Looking at the gearing commander with the stock gearing/sprockets loaded that looks right for the stock 15/43 combo.

To do that, it looks like I want to order the sprocket, prevailing torque nut, and countershaft shim set? Watching youtube videos now on learning to tell if my chain and rear sprockets need replacement.

Is this something I can get help with at this event? Is this, and the doohickey, too much to do in one day?

Thanks,
-Charles

No problem doing those jobs. The prevailing torque nut is okay, I suppose, but it's a PITA since you can't spin it at all without wrenching it the whole way. Shim set if you have an older (pre-'96) bike or are mounting an aftermarket sprocket and have some doubt about its thickness.

One week notice for the next tech day. Haven't had any volunteers to bring food yet, so if necessary, we'll throw some pizzas in the oven. Won't have the big grill this time, but we have the small one.

Maybe the beer pannier will return. Don't know. At least three doohickeys are on the list.

I have a 2001 that I recently picked up, the previous owner has no idea if the doohickey has been done. I ordered (and received) the doohickey, torsion spring, and rotor bolt from EagleMike. I'll be there. (coming from Longmont)

I think some others (from another forum) have volunteered to bring brats or burgers, so that's good. Still, we have pizza in the freezer just in case. Anyone bringing beverages?

There's a convenience store nd a liquor store in Larkspur, otherwise Monument to the south on I25, or Castle Rock to the north.

Slight change of plans on what I'd like to get accomplished,

- Doohickey
- KLX Needle, carb screws
- Drill slide? - Looking at Chuck B's recommendations in this thread,

https://www.klr650.net/forums//showpost.php?p=1429532

All parts from Eagle Mike. Came in the mail today.

Thanks in advance,
-Charles

Think we're OK on beverages? I can pick up some if you think we'll need some more. Or, if there is something else you think we'll need, let me know. I made some biscotti last night I'll bring along (my therapy), and I just got some coffee that my brother roasted, I'll bring a couple bags.
