Default Western Slope Mountain Pass Report

I figured I'd start a thread to update the status of the high mountain passes on the western slope of Colorado. Please feel free to chime in with your observations. I will keep everyone posted about the passes around Crested Butte.

"Just Jane" and I rode over Kebler Pass yesterday to find that it was open before it was officially announced. That was a nice surprise! No Cottonwood yet though.

Here are a few pictures from our ride over Kebler.

Thanks! I think this is a good thread and I hope that others post updates.

Nice photos of what looked to be a great ride. Some time this summer, I will have to tackle Kebler. along with many other great passes in Colorado.

My kids are too young to even consider talking my wife into getting a dual sport. One day...

Here is a good link I found for Ouray/Lake City area trails:

https://www.ouraycolorado.com/Jeep+Road+Conditions

"After record snowfall this year (21+ feet of snow!), our county plow crews are extra busy this spring!"

"Owl Creek Pass - OPEN to the Forest Service gate."

"Yankee Boy Basin - OPEN! Watch out for falling rocks and water run off as temperatures rise. Don't miss this trail as the falls are running through lots of snow."

"Engineer Pass - Unbelievable 20ft slide on first two switchbacks...Ouray entrance. Ouray County is currently clearing and anticipates completion in the next few days. Hinsdale is working their way up from the Lake City side, and San Juan has completed the trail to the top from Animas Forks. Expect ROCKY and ROUGH condiitions during early part of the season."

"Cinnamon Pass - OPEN to Lake City! Warm temperatures are causing severe run-off on the trail. Single lane traffic is necessary on much of the trail. BE CAUTIOUS! Expert off-road drivers and high clearance vehicles only!"

"Last Dollar Road - OPEN! High clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicles only! Anticipate muddy conditions towards the top!"

"Ophir Pass - Clear on the San Juan/Silverton side for approximately 3 miles. San Miguel is currently clearing the Telluride side. Hopefully open in the next 6-7 days."

"Silverton to Animas Forks - OPEN! Lots of spring slide activity, so the road is has debris in some areas, but FUN!"

If it's not listed here and it's high, it's still closed. I'll keep an eye out for changing status.

Cottonwood is open! The CDOT website is saying that there are some muddy and wet spots, but I'll have to go see for myself sometime in the next few days...stay tuned!

More up to date info for Silverton/Ouray/Telluride/Lake City area:

"Gladstone - OPEN
Hurricane Pass - Scheduled to be cleared next week
Imogene Pass - Ouray County is currently clearing. They expect to be at Lookout by the end of the week. Depending on snow pack below summit, Imogene may be clear by the end JUNE. Kudos to our Ouray County crew!
Owl Creek Pass - OPEN, but very muddy at top with snow drifts.
Engineer Pass - OPEN!. ROCKY and ROUGHER than usual if you can believe that! High Clearance, short wheel base vehicles recommended.
Ophir Pass - OPEN, Proceed with CAUTION on the Ophir side.
Red Mountain Town Loop - OPEN and MUDDY!
Stoney Gulch - OPEN! Be aware that Pole Creek is running very high. ATV's NOT recommended. High clearance vehicles use caution!"

Not much has changed in the CB area though.

Planning on doing Tin Cup on the way home from West Fest. Anyone been up there?

If not, I'll post after I return.

Default Hayden Pass

Did a little scouting trip up Hayden Pass to day. Wanted to see how rough it was prior to our West Fest trip.

It took me 40 minutes to get from the sign a the base to the sign at he top. It was quite the rough ride. A lot of loose rock and some trees hanging over the road.

Don't try it with alot of weight on the bike. Ensure you have good "Off Road" type tires.

On several sections, I was justing hanging on and letting the bike find her way.

It was a very fun ride!!

We did a great loop a few weeks ago over:
Old Monarch Pass
Tomichi Pass
Cumberland Pass
and Cottonwood Pass

Check out the trip report: https://www.klr650.net/forums/showthread.php?t=48074

We hit a little snow on Tomichi but it only made things a little more interesting!

Imogene is open, but very tough. A 4 hour ride from Telluride to Ouray. It's very slick in spots where the road goes through snowbanks.

Ophir is open, dry. An idiot in a Honda Civic could do it.

Cinnamon Pass is open, wet in spots. A moderately technical, but still enjoyable ride.

Engineer Pass is open, I hear it's not too bad this year, but you know how that goes.

Los Pinos Pass - open, dry, easy

I understand most of the passes are open. I was over tincup, cumberland, hancock and tomichi a little over 3 weeks ago. I'm going to be going over williams before it closes for the season on Sat. the 30th.

I went over Cottonwood pass on Sunday morning about 6 am. It was cold for sure. Tried to go over tincup and cumberland but snow was real deep. Guess it will be a few more weeks before they are open. Drove up 550 from Durango to Montrose and then to Gunnison on Friday the 28th. It was a great ride with great views.

Sounds like Hancock Pass is closed until further notice. Severe erosion and a washed out bridge have closed the road on the eastern side of the divide. Initial reports are that the road probably will not open this year. As far as I know, you will be able to get to the top of the pass from the west but not be able to continue to St Elmo. If anyone gets more detailed info, please share.

Engineer is open. Three of us rode it Saturday on KLR's. It's a little rough and lots of water on the road.
