Exclamation The Fustration builds / A request for help

Im starting to wonder if I am just not even able to do even the most basic of things when it comes to generic motorcycle maintenance.

I did my first oil change and I stripped the drain plug. Im gonna take it to mike at AKCycles to get a TimeCert installed so that it should be tight again and not leaking again.

My current issue is one that was caused by my own stupidity. I didnt realize that the key could be turned past the "Lock" setting to the "P" setting which basically drains the battery... after heading back to work my bike wont start and after I walked it home I wanted to take the battery out to buy a new one... But I cant seem to get it out and I kinda need the bike to run so I can drive it to AK cycles to get the oil plug fixed.

Is anyone free at any point this coming friday/saturday/sunday to help me A. buy the correct battery and B. Install said battery?

I can pay you in a six pack of your favorite beer, a growler from mooses tooth, some fast food. pick two?

Send me a PM if you have the free time!
Thanks!

Why are you getting a new battery?
Add oil to the engine, in case too much has leaked out (just above the sight glass top (like 1mm) when level)
Take the side plastics off, remove the two side bolts at the side rear of the seat, pull the battery off, (this will take 5 minutes), unscrew the little water caps, fill the cells with distilled water (not quite to the top), put the battery back the way you took it out, jump start it from a car, let it run, put the seat on, put the plastics on (remember, just so they are "snug" there, Hulk), and depending on the amount of oil you have leaked, go for a short (10 min) ride.
Battery should be all better.

hang in there, chris! we've all made our own bone-headed mistakes learning to work on our machines. all one can do is to try to learn from them and carry on. none of us are born knowing how to fix things, we all learn as we go.

if you're losing confidence, i think you're on the right track to find someone to help teach you. besides buying lunch or beer, some sort of labor exchange could be mutually beneficial. what are you good at?

if i were local, i'd totally help you in exchange for an help with an upcoming task that worries me; a friend from the dogpark i volunteered to help move is a possible hoarder!

Chris,
First, don't beat yourself up over this. Many of us have stripped a thread, or run our battery down. And worse...I won't entertain you with my screw-ups here though.
If all you did was run your battery down once, there's a good chance it can be revived. If you'd like to try, I'll loan you a charger (I think it's 1.5 amp) and you can see if your battery can come back to life. Do you still go to school here at UAA? If so I work very close to that and I could bring it to work tomorrow. Or, depending on where you live I might be able to bring it to you tonight.
I'd be glad to help you out with getting and installing a new battery if that's necessary, but I'll be mostly out of town until Sunday night, and couldn't pin down the time right now. So if someone else offers you help with that you should take them up on the offer.
I will PM you with some contact information.
Gary
