More info can be found on the Kawasaki Canada website.

At $13,999 MSRP (and you can bet that's the price they'll charge for them up here, too), it's a bit steep. I'm not the target audience for this bike, though, as I don't find the 650 lacking at all in power. Then again, I use it for daily commuting and weekend rides, not for running down the highway two-up.

I agree with DaveC, that this model is overpriced and nobody needs it, but if it floats your boat, then get one while they are available.

I think you can get the base model Yammie Super Tenre for that kind of jing, which is a tad more intense for the loot.

Up here
- the Super Tenere is $16,499 MSRP, so it's a bit more $$$.
- The Honda Varadero appears to be discontinued, but the 2010 model is still listed on the Honda Canada website at $13,199.
- I think a closer competitor would be the Honda CBF1000A, which is $12,999.

It's all way out of my price range. Just as well, because with that kind of power on tap, I could develop a very expensive throttle hand.

Default Re: The New 1000 Versys!

Let me bring up another perspective, one of physical dimensions. For instance, I am about 5' 10" with a 30+" inseam, so call me a medium sized guy, and the Versys is a fairly "tall" bike. The shed where I store my 650 Versys is out in my back yard, where the lawn is not quite level and includes some little bumps and ruts, etc. The point being that in maneuvering my bike there I often find myself using tippy-toes, and because the Versys has a fairly high center of gravity, if the bike begins to tip, then I had better plant a firm foot on the ground, fast. Moreover, bigger bikes, such as the new 1000 Versys, naturally do weigh more and perhaps much of that extra weight could also be fairly high up, including more cylinders, top end and all. And that might rule out such a bigger bike for me, such as I might not be able to handle the extra weight at dog-paddle speed.

That's because Honda is making a VFR1200R variant called the Crosstour to replace it.

According to this article in Cycle Canada, it won't be available to the Canadian market.

Oh well...

With a 1000 Versys in the spotlight, as above, I went online and looked around, including the Kawasaki website, but website after website seems to say that a 1000 Versys is no more than VAPORWARE. That is, there is much discussion about a 1000 Versys, but apparently there is not a 1000 Versys to actually exist, and all such discussion amounts to no more than speculative talk.

Could I be mistaken? Does a 1000 Versys actually exist?

As mentioned above, it's on the Kawasaki Canada site https://www.kawasaki.ca/model/STREET-...61/Versys-1000. It's also on the Kawasaki UK site (https://www.kawasaki.co.uk/Versys1000). It's not vaporware. I'll check out our local dealer this weekend. If it's there, I'll take a picture of it.

Perhaps it is not being released to the US market? Kawasaki did that with the 'C' model KLR...it was sold in Canada, Europe, and Australia, but not the US.

@ DaveC

Aha! Thank you, there really is a 1000 Versys, and, as you were saying, apparently it is not available in the US, where I am.

But that is OK by me. The 650 Versys does about everything I need a bike to do. Nice bike!

A 1000 Versys could only get me speeding tickets that I really do not need.

Well, I checked, but there were no 2012 Kawasaki's on the floor yet (gotta have room for the snowblowers). Oh well...

My local Kawasaki dealer does the winter thing, too. No snowblowers, but they stock Kawasaki's 4-wheel drive utility vehicles, good for plowing a driveway, hauling a day's worth of firewood, going through thick mud, farm work, etc. The dealer also stocks the Polaris line of 4-WD utility vehicles, too. Polaris is well known for its Victory line of motorcycles, but the dealership only stocks the utility vehicles.

Yeah, I used to ride all year long, winter and all. I know how to dress for REALLY cold weather. But in recent years the highway departments have been using a type of road salt that is particularly nasty, sodium chloride or something like that, which causes motorcycle corrosion problems like never before! Riding just one winter through that kind of salt can turn a bike into permanent junk.

I guess don't see the niche it fits....

Heck, I could put some Dual-sport tires on my CB919 and have a bike that costs half as much, and could probably outperform it on the road as well as in the dirt.

There's a guy on the Hornet site that is creating just such a Frankenbike. Seems crazy to me, if for no other reason than the routing of the exhaust headers. Not to mention the short-travel suspension.

Not for me! For another thing, I can't imagine wanting 100 HP at the rear wheel....

I agree. I too do not see the niche the 1000 Versys fits into. After all, the 650 Versys began as the 650 Ninja, but Kawasaki traded off some of the top end horsepower, in favor of better mid-range torque, and then gave the Versys an upright seating position which can go cross-country, all day long, altogether a bike which can easily break posted speed limits, with very sophisticated handling, and while being quite comfortable to ride. So, what could a 1000 Versys do better than the 650 Versys, other than to get speeding tickets?
