Default Cylinder Boring in Calgary

Hey guys, I'm thinking of doing the 685 this winter. Has anyone done it and did you get your boring done in Calgary or did you ship it south (ie EM)? If you got it done in Calgary, where did you get it done and how was the workmanship?

Thanks, Duane

Got mine done through Eagle Mike. I didn't look very hard but couldn't find anything local and the service through EM was very good. He ships you the new cylinder, you do the swap and send him back your old one. Minimal down time and the price was reasonable.

Thanks nic,

Thanks for the information. I did find that Don at Universal Cycle does it here in Calgary. He said he's done aat least 20 685's. Just figured the shipping would be expensive to EM.

Thanks, DUane

Did the 685 last winter.
Mine is an 08, so I did the upgrade mainly to stop oil consumption.
I bought the kit at Universal Cycle and had Don do the re-bore.
Couldn't be happier.
Don is very knowledgeable and knows his stuff. If you’re in the Calgary area I’d be heading to Universal.
(While you’re there ask him to show you the exhaust on his KLR and the dyno sheets, he’s making more hp than most on this forum)

I sent my cylinder and head to Schnitz at the end of 2007 when the dollar peaked at 1.10, got the 685 and stage 2 head treatment; worked on and personally engraved by KLR Cary.

I just finished a 685 through Eagle Mike. The pistons were out of stock for a while so it took a bit longer than I'd planned, but EM did a perfect job on cylinder and head, shipped it back in a good sturdy box with pre cut gaskets, etc. Highly recommended.

If you decide to stay local, talk to Mike Briggs at Performance.

Hello All.

In Calgary and need to do the 658 now before she gets warm out. Looking at Universal to do the complete job however the price is steep in my opinion. Not questioning the quality of work, just wondering if I should do the wyman winn option.

Any suggestions?

Hi Thone, how expensive is a little steep at Universal? With the exchange on the dollar and shipping, how does it compare? How does it compare with Eagle Mike's 685?

Whoa! That is steep. I bet you're looking at $800 max, all in, with Eagle Mike. I would be looking south too. Much like Wyman, you know the quality that you're getting too.

I didn't end up doing anything. My bike was brand new and isn't an oil burner so I will wait and see how things pan out. At this time it's still original. I would definitely look to EM or Wyman to get it done though. $2100! That goes a long way to buying a bike!

It sure would. I will likely do it my self as I have done the do, thermo bob, ticking time bomb and klx needle on my own.

Thanks for your comments.

I'm doing the Doo, MC mod and valve check before weather warms up as well. Actually, I'm doing considerably more but those are the engine bits. Was the Doo easy?

Yeouch! $2100?

The EM piston kit is $295, cylinder boring is $100, and full cylinder head recondition $160 - same price for 685 or 658 kit. $555 for everything from EM, make that $666 CDN at the current exchange rate. I paid $42 CDN for shipping, so a bit more than $700 all in, reassembled and running.

It makes an unbelievable difference. I only paid $1300 for the bike - a sun-faded bike with a smoking problem. Now it runs way stronger than my new 08 every did. If I bought a new or used KLR, doing the EM 685 would be one of my first mods.

Thone.... you sure the 2100 isn't including labour?
I bought the kit, had Universal do the rebore and I did the labour. all for under $500cnd.
other guys are doing it for 600-700US depending when they did it and the exchange rate.
$2100 is way out to lunch. Sounds like they are doing the entire job for you.
drop your bike off...pick it up done.
