Default Valve shim kit in Calgary?

ZED's KLR got the idea from mine that it wants to be a 685 Street 'Tard and in the process of installing the 685 kit we've discovered he has pitted exhaust valves/seats - so dealing with that is going to end up requiring a valve adjustment.

Having a shim kit in hand would make the valve adjustment faster & easier than having to do the measure, order, wait for shims process... Anyone around with a kit they're willing to share/sell? We' in NE Calgary.

I thought that Don at UniversalCycle kept kits on hand as he is a KLR-rider as well

Interesting. I'll check into that. Universal Cycle doesn't tend to pop into my head for KLR parts - it has been so long since either KLR has needed a valve adjustment that I don't think we'd even learned Universal Cycle existed at the time.

Thanks for the offer! The sizes that are in there are already smaller than that though...

I normally visit Don a few times a year, usually tires for my KLR or other misc. goodies. He also keeps the Doohickey kit and some other KLR-specific stuff hanging on the wall waiting for someone to come in. He was telling me that he wants to carry all the KLR-stuff that aviciouscycle.ca and twistedthrottle.com has ... crash-bars, skid-plates, gear-sets, bags, etc ...

Hah, good timing. I just did my valves today. Universal does typically stock many 29mm shims (ie KLR sized), they probably have what you need. They happened to have all sizes except one of the sizes I needed (245) for two of my valves! Figures. I guess they've been doing lots of valve jobs lately, fair enough. Universal is very KLR friendly. The owner and one of the staff both ride KLRs.

Anyway, after that I discovered that Pro-Am (around the corner) carries shims of every conceivable 29mm size, but at $25+ a piece. The guy did warn me, but if you're really desperate they've got 'em. I wasn't that desperate.

I ALSO discovered that Blackfoot has them at about $13 each. HOWEVER.. BRING A CALIPER! I walked outta there with two 245 shims and a 260 shim that all turned out to be 29.5mm. Argh. Whoever stocked their supply must have mixed it up, because they were in the "KLR" slots. I ended up having to go back to Blackfoot, then I went into the back of the shop where they have the big ol' cabinet full of shims, and I went through dozens until I found the *real* 29mm shims. I had my caliper in hand, and measured every single one to make SURE it was actually 29mm and the correct thickness. BRING A CALIPER (or insist that the person who sells them uses one to verify them).

So upshot: shims of any size are available at any non-Sunday, but beware of getting a 29.5 mm shim! It definitely won't fit.

Good to know

I spoke with Universal Cycle last week and was told that they'd "likely" have the shims required, depending on exact size needed - as you we're unlucky enough to find out. We await the return of the head for ZED's bike from the machinist that's taking care of the seats so that we can reassemble and find out what shim sizes we'll need.

Out of curiosity, how much did Universal charge for the shims? I didn't bother to ask.

Mike Briggs has em at Performance Cycle. Way cheaper than ProAm.
