Default Update to my collection

Its been a while since my last posting here. We are in the middle of a really chilly winter, so, I snagged a 1995 KLR with only 1000 more KM's on the clock than what my 2005 has on it.

The 1995 was lookin' really beat. The previous owner had painted it, and, I imagine it looked good at the beginning, but, the paint is starting to look beyond horrible, bolts and fasteners are in bad condition, rust is showing, so, I thought I would do what I can to make it look good again, clean it up and turn it into a bush-bike for the Waiparous area.

So - beyond the super-cool paint, it will be getting Dunlop D606 tires, bark-busters, skid-plate, crash-guards, 14-tooth front (unsure what gearing yet for the rear - 44-tooth or maybe a 45), fork-brace, sub-frame bolt-upgrade ... and then I'll do a quickie through the motor and make sure that everything internally is good, see if there is a Doohickey inside, add on a ThermoBob and such.

I also designed a ToolTube mount that I have already laser-cut and formed and then next weekend I will TIG-weld it together, paint it and mount it. The ToolTube is already cut and sealed and is just waiting for the bike to be ready for it.

Without further wording - here is what everyone will ask for, the picture! The fender is only sitting on the tire - it needs a bit more paint before I'll mount it up..

Forgot to mention, I just listed on Kijiji a couple of KLR tall windshields that I wanna trade straight-up for good stock windshields for both of my first-gens ...

Hey Vance
nice little project
Love the jeep decal, haha
let me know when you go on her maiden voyage, I'll tag along.
My bike is in pieces right now, finally getting around to the 685 upgrade, and some long over due maintenance.

Hey Ken .. Jeep is not a decal - it is painted into place using a "negative" stencil. It looks great in the picture and from 10' away, but, up close and personal, it kind of sucks. I am going to try to do something better on the covers below the seat ... have a friend at Acklands looking for some 3M spray-glue that acts like a post-it note glue ... adhesive #75 ...

I have welded my first ToolTube mount up and it looks damn good on that olive KLR, I pulled the radiator covers off and they are beat-to-crap. So - they will get a very rough paint job and I'll hunt up some new covers that would be in significantly better condition than those ones.

if your going to paint some of the panels,
you may want to take the opportunity to paint the whole thing with truck bed liner.
you could make that thing look mint.
and if your going to take it into the back country to abuse it,
that sh#t's tough as nails.
Just need to lose those purple socks!!
I'm interested in seeing what you've come up with for a tool tube,
I have to add one soon.

In one of the attached pictures you can see the tool-tube .. I am not going to show the mount for it yet ... that is something special that you can see in person ...

I just finished a quick spray - everything is still soakin' wet in this picture - it will dry to a nice flat finish like everything else.

Hey that's sweet. Nice addition.
Given the prolonged (never-freaking-ending) winter that we're enjoying, I've got my 03 apart as well. Cylinder and head are in Calif with Eagle Mike and due back soon as a 685. Can't wait to bolt it back together and fire it up.

My 03 has faded green plastics with sort of an oxidized dusty look on some parts. Would like to paint it up - did you do that with rattle cans or a proper paintgun?

My '95 might get the 685-kit - I'll decide on that after I fire it up for the first time. I would love to check yours out sometime, eh?

I am using Krylon-Fusion paints (from CT) and I used nylon-scrubbies to clean it very well before rattle-can bombing it up. For the rearfender I decided to try some steel-wool to clean it and I think that might be the ticket to making it stick.

I have just put the first two coats of flat-clear over the side panels - it isn't quite as flat in color as just the paint by itself, but, it doesn't look too bad.

Depending on how well it all sticks - I might just sand it all down again and do it over - but - that would be a next-winter project.

Oh ya - I already took my '05 out for a shake-down run ... I was just dreamin' too hard every night about riding that I gave in and then, the dreams were satisfied

Nae, thanks. Would love to see how it turns out. Still waitin on my cylinder from Eagle Mike so not sure Ill try painting mine this year. As long as the wheels go round and the snow is mostly gone, I'll be a happy camper.

Hey Krb, what pipe are you goin with on the 685? I've got the Jardine RT-4 on my 08 and it's pretty noisy. I was thinking of something different for the more off-road oriented 685.

On Sunday, in the snow, I was actually driving down the 22 in my Jeep looking at the patches of asphalt and thinking, "Yeah, I could maybe ride that..."

April tomorrow...

I went with the FMF Powerbomb Header and a FMF Q4 Quiet Series, was told it should be a little louder than stock. (hopefully not too much)

Nice setup... Big dollar combo tho. I'd really like to try the FMF power bomb.

Sorry for the thread hijack, NaeKid!

Snows melting! Yippee!

... and the snow is supposed to slam us again tonight, but, by the weekend might be warm enough to go for a ride again ....

I'll be stripping down the tank on my '95 tomorrow night and get it ready for the paint. I only have my fairing left to clear-coat and then put all the plastics into my south-facing window to cure for a while before putting them back on my '95.

Still have to weld-up my second ToolTube mounting bracket, paint it and put it onto my '05 .. then spend some more money on stuff for my '95 (dammit - I was supposed to visit Don at UniversalCycle for some stuff ...argh! .... That will be tonight now) ...

10-weeks and counting till I ride to the Yukon ...

Its going to be me and my daddy headin' up to Dawson from here, through Jasper, back down through PrinceGeorge (and visit my step-brother's son), down to the #1 and then through Banff back here again ...

The general route-plan: https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Ca...&via=2&t=m&z=5

Depending on various factors, it will be between two and three weeks - mostly camping and some motels as required.

Dad will be on his 2014 RoadKing and I'll be on my 2002 ElectraGlide. The '02 was a Christmas present to me from my dad last year.
