Just picked this 2002 up from a neighbor. 12,487 miles on it.
He had let it sit beside his barn for years and got frustrated with trying to get it going again. So I got it for a song.

Spent a little time getting it running. (It runs good now) and cleaning it up. Then I decided to swap on some parts I had from a 2010 parts bike I had a few parts left over from.

Mostly fenders from the 2010 and ignition, and a 1st gen IMS tank. The Pro Taper aluminum bars, in ATV Tall, made a big improvement. New clutch cable and levers too!

Then I sanded down The 2002 OEM side covers, and fairing, added some steel WWW ( that I also had left over) and painted them black to match the fenders and tank. I installed stainless hex bolts everywhere I could, while I was at it!

Replaced the seat cover and re padded the seat with better foam. Something I've done to all my seats to make them more rideable.

Converted the side cover, seat and gas tank screws and bolts over to 1/4 DZUS fasteners. This way it doesn't need tool to strip it down to the frame.

Pretty happy with how it turned out.

Forgot to add I added the inner rear fender and license plate to it after these pictures. And that long hose hanging down got trimmed. It's the fuel cap overflow vent line. Oh, and the second hose is the factory water overflow vent tube.

I put up an updated picture of it in a few days. BTY, It will wheelie in second gear with just a blip of the throttle. Fun bike to ride.

The best part is I have less than $500 in the whole bike.

Hi all, heres my old girl. She's an 1989 Tengai, and was first registered the year I joined the Air force so I know i'm getting old now.

I picked her up in 2014 for around £500, 38000 miles on the clock. For the next year or so she sat ungaraged and unloved due to divorce, life, house moves etc.

Anyway, over time I have been doing a few bits such as Oil, filters and coolant flush and change, Doohickey and tools courtesy of EM, new clutch friction plates and cable, cleaned and modded the carb as per instructions on this fine site , new water pump seal etc, new to me exhaust (Laser for £80 off ebay for the full system) and some more fairings as the originals were heat damaged and generally not in great condition, plus I managed to get the lower plastic bash plate as she didn't come with one. I couldn't refuse as theyre like rocking horse poo.....

I also did the front wheel bearings and steering bearings (that lower race is fun to get out eh? ). I intend to do the rear wheel and swing arm at some point but haven't got there yet.

Oh and the choke lever broke so I have replaced it with a pull out job that goes straight on the carb, bit fiddly to find in the dark but works a treat.

I put her in for MOT and she passed first time. I was sure she would fail as the brakes are Cr@p but obviously not that bad

Last job I did was to sort out the cracked oil drain from the PO. They'd cracked it then Helicoiled it. The Helicoil was at a stupid angle and meant it would never seal properly.....

I read the advice on here and went for the piggy back option of drilling and tapping a new drain plug, then used quick steel to seal up the original. It seems to be holding well but early days. I've also recently grabbed an aluminium bashplate for £30 off Ebay again but it's apparently for a KLR not a Tengai, and doesn't quite fit but where there's a will there's a way and with minor mods it will go on.

She is now in service and giving my 2001 ZX9R a break while I sort the steering bearings and powdercoat the wheels...... (oh and decide what to do with 2 x ZXR750 L's, which I believe they called ZX7R in the states? could be wrong)

They are like chalk and cheese but the Tengai has a grin factor all of it's own and may stop me from losing my licence

I don't think she will ever win any beauty awards but she certainly is fun.

I know all about the panels, I was so lucky to find these, and the rear panels are made of unobtainium I think....

Unfortunately a lot of the kit for the KLR has to come from the states which makes it much more expensive but I am on the lookout for crash bars.

It's funny but I was actually looking at Tenere's (3AJ and 1VJ??) when I first saw this old girl and just fell in love

Took the KLR out for a shakedown ride yesterday. Just installed a new 6.6kg shock spring and wired GPS to the battery as well as a few other things. Did 127 miles total, about 15 miles of dirt. The bike rides much more comfortably now on street and dirt.

Lol!! Good eye, Google enhanced the colors in that photo. Here are a few more that were not enhanced.
