Looking for a pair of 2.25's, would probably have a 2.50 left over. Please PM me if you can help.

The black coating may be a moly or other surface coat to assist with initial wear in of the shim to cam lobe. New cams often have a coating and we used cam lube when installing camshafts regardless of new or reinstall. I always put a dab on the cam journals and lobes when doing a valve adjustment. A small bottle of cam assembly lube lasts for a long time when doing V8's and mine is more than a decade old 'cause only doing bikes.

I'd want to know for certain what was that coating before using some abrasive to remove. If had to guess, I'd leave it alone.

I often "make" my own shims.

It's easy to do if you have a belt sander, a thick piece of glass, 320 grit sand paper and an accurate OD micrometer. I use the belt sander to reduce the shim to within about 0.003" of the thickness I need. I take it slow with lots of measuring to ensure the surfaces remain parallel.

Then I lay a sheet of 320 grit wet/dry sandpaper on my plate of glass and "sand" the shim to final thickness using WD 40 to float away the cuttings. Again taking lots of measurements. The surface finish appears to be at least 16RMS when I get through sanding (polished), but I position the newly polished side of the shim down into the bucket and let the cam ride on the virgin side of the shim.

If you have a local BMW motorcycle dealer, you may be able to get shims from them. I think there's a shim bank here in Tucson, but it's so much easier to go to Ironhorse BMW and raid their collection.

I also have a BMW and have been a bit of a pest with the guy who mans the parts desk, so he knows me. Last time I did a shim run, he traded me 1 for 1 my old shims for the ones I needed. (I think the BMW dealer is the only one I've ever actually liked!)
