Default Re: Valve Shim Swap ? Bayarea

I thought I would just throw it out there for the people in the bay area that Hayward Cycle Salvage has 29mm shims for trade plus cash. You take them your old shims and they trade it for other used shims + $3. I know this sounds like a lot compared to a lot of posts here, but I looked around and Golden Gate Cycle charges $12.99 per shim, and Mission Cycle charges $25 per shim (!!!! WTF !!!!).

Plus they are good guys over there.

Check with your dealer's service dept. They may swap shims with you at no cost. Mine does.
Mine used to (Grand Prix in Santa Clara, Ca.) but now they don't.

I'm checking my valves tomorrow and will add them to the list if I end up replacing any and have spares.

I ended up swapping shims with two guys at the last tech day I attended (thanks again guys!) so I don't have any to swap now.

I haven't seen them mentioned so I'll put in a plug. Z1 Enterprises sells 29mm valve shims for $4.58 each. They specialize in vintage Japanese bikes, the Kawasaki KZ series mainly (which the 1000s and 1100s use the same shims). I've ordered from them several times before and they are a great company to do business with.

All good info. I have found that if you walk around the parts counter and get a hold of a mechanic you will find that they have a cup full of old KLR shims that they have taken out of bikes and will trade or sell for your replacement shims. The shims are not unique. My local Yamaha dealers had some that fit the KLR and were quite willing to part with them.

I have one 270 and six 265s if anyone wants them or wants to trade. I'm looking for smaller ones (255 and smaller). No rush for me. I'm just planning ahead.

29 mm.

There are also 29.5 mm shims out there, don't get those; they won't fit.
