There are also 29.5 mm shims out there, don't get those; they won't fit.
Okay thanks ? Well that might be the end O that, I was looking at Hot Cams shim kits in a mail order, they list kits but none are close?
They list the largest as being 10.00 mm.

But atleast I have a number now. - Thanks much !!

I just checked the valves on my KLR and all four were at the top end of the tolerance. Fortunately I was able to use two of the shims in other valves but I still needed two more shims. I called my local BMW dealer and asked them if I could swap to 29mm shims, they said yes and It cost me $10. They are a business so I had no problem with this I think that is a great deal at $5 a shim and I didn't have to order and wait for them and pay shipping. My local Kawasaki dealer said they didn't swap shims, but they could sell them to me at $12 each. I saved $12!

Also, while I was there I test road a F800 GS. Very nice. Last Friday I test road a Triumph Tiger 800 XC... If I had the disposable income I would have but a deposit down on that Tiger. The worst part about doing the test ride was on the way home I seemed to notice the vibrations more on my KLR.

I really want to test ride one of the 800 Tigers when they get a demo one in Kansas City. I think one of those will be my retirement present to myself in about another year and a half.

By the way, anyone have any 235, 240 or 245 shims they are looking to get rid of?

Crap . At 7700 smiles I had to remove the 2.75s move the 2.65s and purchase a 2.50 & a 2.55 .

Is this going to be a every off season thing? Some of you are looking for 2.35s ?

Oh well I do enjoy the ride just seems like a lot of maintance?

OH and yes they tried to sell me 29.5mm shims ! " Thank you "

I had my own measuring stick.

The change in valve seating may not stop but it should slow down after the initial settling.

One thing I don't understand is why I've not seen anyone else say this (perhaps I just missed it) ......... IF your town has a motorcycle "recycler" (junkyard), try there. I just came from one near me and picked up a total of seven shims.... The three I needed and four othes so that I have some in sizes I that I might need. They didn't have all the sizes made but they had most ..... Cost was whopping $3 a shim ($21 total).. At that price picking up the few extra was a no-brainer

That is how I do mine.I grind bucket side of shim.06 650 with 32,000 miles.

I would like to trade some 29mm KLR650 shims.

I have three 2.75, two 2.45, and three 2.40 shims I would like to trade.

I need two 2.55, two 2.60, and at least one 2.70 shim.

Even trade---shim for shim............anyone got some.............otherwise, I will sell mine for $4.00 each shipped.

I'm getting rady to do my 688 kit (Once I get it from Wyman) and decided to lap my valves while I was in there. I previously had 220 shims in my exhaust valves and I need to get 1-205 and 1-210. Im not having any luck finding these anywhere and my local Kawi dealer told me with shims that small they might be too small for the tappets. Can anyone offer any input here, and possibly offer advice on how to shave my shims if finding the correct size is not worth the work?

Most any auto machine shop that has a surface grinder can do this for you.Have them grind bucket side of shim. This is how I do mine.It can be more accurate this way, as you can grind to any size you need . Jim

Thanks for the advice guys. What is the smallest shim that will fit before they start to become flush or even recessed into the tappet? If this happens in the future what are my options? Will it be time for new valves?

From what I have seen the smallest size shim you can buy is 2.00. After that you may be able to have them shaved but how much room there is in the tappet may become the issue.

Sounds to me that you are breaking new ground here so we'll wait to hear about your experience.
