Iím a ham guy from years back. Came from my dad who was a radio operator in WWII. Cell phones have reduced both cb and 2 meter ham quite a bit. I still carry my 2 meter/440hand held as a backup. Itís about the size of a pack of cigarettes and as others hav mentioned, allow you to use repeaters and cover long distances. Truckers often use modified 10 meter radios for (illegal) cb use. A lot of truckers have moved to 2 meter ham just because of all the noise on cb.

But if you are really in trouble out of cell service itís hard to beat an Inreach or Spot.

IF you have a SENA headset, you can actually purchase a kit that will give you push to talk button and links seemlesly with the headset. Works with multiple handsets. Me, I prefer Ham over CB/FRS. Better range and chatting with fellow enthusiasts. Just got to know the repeaters.

This was discussed several weeks back on the adventure rider radio podcast

Cheers

Wait, I must repent. As a good KLR owner, SENA may not be used. Cans and string only! LOL.

thanks everyone for the suggestions. i realize HAM is king, but i went with the suggestion here. it will be expensive but it allows me to use the option the situation calls for. via bluetooth PTT buttons and SENA, as well as not having to re-wire my helmet. im sure there is another thread discussing sena but is there one in particular that you like?

I thought this was an informative enough vid, I bothered to look it up again for anyone else. It'll get you started.

Can you use it while riding? I would think the wind noise would be impossible?

are you referring to the SENA? I have not received mine so i cant speak to it personally. testimonials seem really positive. i plan on spending as much time off highway as possible now so i doubt it will be too much of an issue for me. I rode cruisers long enough, now i want adventure. so long pavement!

Btw if you travel on logging road here in Canada, cb's can save your life since log trucks will call in the road they are on, the km their at and the direction their going. That's doesnt make them slow down but you can sure get out of their way
