Default High Country Rolling,2017

I am excited to finally get our newest rally thread going.........High Country Rolling! Look forward to seeing a bunch of our regular Southeast riders, but also hoping to meet a bunch of the Mid-Atlantic group as well!

It was 1993 when I took a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway on my '92 Suzuki Katana 750 to visit family in Richmond, VA. Along that tour, I stopped off to stay the night at High Country Motorcycle Campground. I can't remember exactly how I heard about this campground, but back then there use to be just 4 in the SE. It happened to have been a Sunday night when I got there, so the only person that was there was the owner.....Turkey Tom. He was a dualsporting BMW rider........80GS....100GS, etc. It was great hearing his stories! That conversation opened my eyes more to getting a touring dirt bike, as how I looked at it. On the way back home from Richmond, I hit the BRP and stayed another night at HCMC. The bunkhouse was lonely both of those nights, but it was nice having my pick of beds! So.....yes....I am looking forward to getting back to HCMC, after over 24 years since my last visit!

Make sure and check out their website below.....but they have:
Tent sites - $12/night
Bunkhouse (9 beds....5 lower, 4 bunk) - $20/night
Chalets (4) - $45/night
Cabin - $100/night up to 2 people (2 additional beds at $20 each)

I have spoke with Carolina Bear Killer and we are talking about doing the same type of ride as Chuck. Leave from Northeast Georgia on Thursday morning and ride to Del Rio TN, spend the night there and then ride over to HCMC on Friday. We will be coming home on Saturday due to a prior commitment on Sunday. If anyone in this area wants to join us, come on

Just a few days left......anyone else thinking of meeting at HCMC? Make sure and bring your sleeping bag if staying in the Bunkhouse or Chalet.

Good news...I'm now officially retired. Thus my High Country Rollin' schedule will be based on the Retired Person Plan...I'll leave whenever I get ready and get there when I get there. I will be traveling slowly, because I'm riding a KLR hack, and I look forward to seeing you guys. Don't hold up any rides waiting for me to arrive...trust me, you don't want to go as slow as me on my hack! See you soon...or at least sometime!

Had a great ride with ya'll . Enjoyed the riding, the company, the food, especially the Ridgewood BBQ. The ride back Saturday was kind of interesting due to the blow out of 2 tubes. I spent a nice cool Saturday evening on the front porch of the North Carolina Welcome Center on I 26 waiting on my wife to pick me up. Look forward to the next trip.

My dual sport sidecar did its maiden creek crossing at HCR 2017, with Cherokee Chuck at the controls. The loud bang at the very end of the video is contact between the sidecar and a large, immovable rock. The lesson is that under throttle a right-hand sidecar outfit will pull hard right, because the bike is powered but the sidecar is not. Thanks to Steve for the video.

Now that I think about it, "controls" might have been a poor choice of words, at least to describe the last few feet of the ride!
