2002 USMC KLR 650 M1030b1 Patina Bike

Up for sale is a 2002 USMC M1030b1 KLR 650 patina bike. This bike was built from the best pieces of 5 M1030b1s that came to me as a lot. I picked out the best “stuff” I could find in the piles and set about putting one together as a driver/show bike sporting the “patina of experience”. The bike you are looking at today is the result of that parts pile cherry picking.

When HDT modified these bikes from the civilian KLR 650 to the military spec M1030b1, HDT went to the best in the business for their upgrades. For example the suspension at both ends is from Progressive, the unique M1030b1 7-gallon fuel tank is from IMS as are the HD driver foot pegs. Front tire is a Pirelli Rallycross and the rear is a Dunlop D606.

When they were being modified, HDT also reversed some civilian aspects of these KLRs. They were not intended for street use, obviously, so why do we need mirrors, license plate lights, full underfenders, working turn signals and that oh so civi thing: a removable ignition key!?! These civilian KLR bits have been put back on this bike.

The only obviously new parts of the build are the camo covered seat and the hand grips—important bike interface points. It also has a new AGM battery. The bike has 3750 original miles but the gage cluster was missing; I only got the odometer. The gauge pod presently on the bike is a civi one from my Parts Closet that shows 27,000 miles. I will include the original low mileage odometer.

The bike presently starts, drives, stops and runs. No smoke, leaks or odd noises. I suspect that the important “Doohicky” hasn’t been replaced. The carb is the original smogger and needs serviced for the bike to run well. I will include a fresh carb that has been modified with the 22 cent mod, 2.2 turn primary screw, .140 main jet and drilled slide, ready to simply swap with the original. The fluids were flushed and replaced with fresh. Will include a can of DOT 5 brake fluid. This was a garage museum piece for me more than a ready to ride motorcycle so the new owner should go over it carefully before they ride it. It can easily be made perfectly rideable in a matter of a couple hours. As a bonus, I will include the 2 factory service manuals, a Clymer manual and a CD with digitized copies of the dealer microfiche covering the years 1984-2007.

The bike on offer has all of the M1030b1 military hardware upgrades it should. Beyond the bits listed above, it sports its original military specific handlebars/handguards, the KLR 250/650 fairing conversion that puts the headlight in an arc with the forks as opposed to the civi frame mount style headlight, bash plate, goggle bag and forward brush guard. The military specific blackout light system works as it should.

I have a hyper rare clean, legal Texas title for the bike in my name. Can be titled anywhere. Bike today is insured but the license and inspection needs an update. Again, this is a unique opportunity to acquire one of these rare and desirable KLRs and to have a legal title for it is almost unheard of today.

I have recently lost my storage/workspace and have no place to work on or store this or it would be ready to ride before I put it up for sale. I’ve lowered the price so the new owner can make the repairs/upgrades I would do if I still had the resources. $3200
