Default Air Filter question

doing some maintenance on KLR Diesel. The conversion kept the KLR air cleaner foam material which is crumbly now and a bit worthless. Someone before me built an inner cage for what looks like fitting OEM filter material around. It is all braised together. A central part of this cage broke so she does not hold firmly in the air box. Cage appears to be replacing whatever was originally an OEM part. Cage mounts to box via what looks to be OEM arrangement. Bolt thru the center.

What does the OEM cage look like that the filter media goes around?

Any suggestions on replacing this cage?

I searched first for Air Cleaner Cage and Air Cleaner Frame but came up with nothing. Looks like I could get a K&N filter that does not use a cage.... I guess?

Will add Picture soon. OH shoot.. forgot..... grr.. photo will probably end up in another post further down below in this thread since may not get to it before editing of this post gets blocked.

Suggestions?

Based on your description of the 'custom part', yep, that looks like it. Good find!

The stock foam filter works well for filtering and air flow and fits on the cage you found. Mine has 100k miles on it and still working. I clean it in gas, squeeze it out, oil it and go.

Cobbled together air filter holder that Previous owner did. Would have worked GREAT if the center piece had held up. That is it laying separately inside the cage.

Debated.... gambled... LOST the bet

Debated that the filter bolt the original builder of this Cobbled together air filter cage/holder was same length as OEM. Where I was ordering the filter and cage/holder from wanted 8 bucks plus shipping for just the bolt.

GO FIGURE... DRAT- Lost that bet Was hoping not. Was such a cute bolt Had a cute washer brazed onto the head turning into nice thumb screw fitting.

Now that I got an OEM filter cage/holder and new filter media set up ready to go and. the cobbled together bolt is mm's to short to reach the nut and cinch it holder down....

Can anyone measure the shank length of their air filter bolt along with the width of any spacers or washers that go between its head and the air filter for me please. Pic. would help if you can.

Much appreciate any assistance. Need to go buy a replacement from hardware store and might as well get something close as possible to OEM right off the shelf.

Hmm, repeated copy/paste, works now.

Yessir, I know you're looking for the bolt.

1. If someone does a search for air filter cage, they may likely come across this thread, hence the link.

2. Mike is worth a call regarding that bolt. If he can't sell you one, he's likely to measure one for you.
