Default Essential Mods - 09 KLR 650 - 4.0

KLR owners,

I have had my bike rugged toured out 2.0

Going for rugged and durable, I accomplished it! I went down 2 times on a ride to Sequoia. Once slow on the street into a berm on a decreasing radius turn, the other was also slow in deep sand. Both times I jacked up my calves from the panniers, but both times the bike was fine. I also noticed the Cee Bailey's tall windscreen was a bit much, and the Corbin Seat was too hard for me. So I went with Seahorse cases, CB's smaller windscreen, and the stock seat. 3.0

There was something still lacking, I found myself not a fan of long trips, doing more off-roading, and it was just too heavy for that. 490lbs with a full tank!!

I was inspired by SamM's work
https://www.klr650.net/forums/showthread.php?t=78531
I just didn't want to go THAT far as mine is still under warranty.

So I found the happy medium. 4.0

All mods from stock are as follows, and my opinion on each:
Cee Bailey's sport windscreen
--Excellent upgrade
--Looks great
--Keeps wind off you at speed
Highway Dirt Bike handlebars
--VERY sturdy
--Must have risers and Pro-taper bar
--Gets rid of "mickey mouse ears" with integrated mirrors
Pro-taper Fat bar
--Great upgrade
--Makes bike feel very sturdy
Rox Risers 7/8th to 1 1/8
--Must have for standing and fat bar
IMS 10 Gal Fuel Tank
--Very expensive
--Worth it
--Acts as a rad/upper engine guard
IMS 1" Extended Shifter
--Very inexpensive
--Worth it
--Allows (me at least) to use MX boots to shift
Acerbis universal front supermoto fender
--BEST upgrade fro freeway riding!!
--Looks great
--Almost entirely gets rid of high speed wobble
Galfer steel braided brake lines
--Better bite, but was pretty disappointing, I was expecting a bigger difference
--I was scared off for a while because I thought this would make a HUGE difference
K&N Air Filter
--Noticeable power increase
Cycleracks Rack
--Seems lighter than my previous setup
--Replaces ugly stock rack
BattleWing Tires
--GREAT tires... Seriously...
Progressive Suspension (yes, that's their name) progressive front springs
--Must have for heavier riders
--Very good
Eibach Rear Spring
--As old setup (heavy) I had to use max size
--With new setup I will need to downgrade the spring as it too strong
--Great product, stops the bike from bottoming out all the time
Happy Trail LED WOW Tail Light
--GREAT mod
--Easy
--Worth it

Hope this helps new people to find these awesome products. I am a very happy KLR owner!

Hey thanks for the write up! Could you post a picture of your cockpit? I would like to get a better view of your highway dirt bikes handguard setup. I really want either the IMS or Safari tank. Do you feel that the bike gets too heavy with that 10 gallon tank full? Does the the tank seem like it will give adequate protection for the radiator. Sorry for the questions. Your bike looks great!

I think the weight with a full tank feels GREAT. Still light and nimble. Just did a ride at Cleghorn CA with 8 gallons, couldn't tell.

Here are pics of the HDB setup as requested. Had to cut a little off the Pastrana "High" Bars at the ends, and the guards contact the fairings a bit at the top, but only SLIGHTLY. To be honest the guy at HDB did not recommend me get them for the KLR, but I had them for my DRZ already and knew what I was in for. The amount of interference will depend on your windscreen.

These are closeups of the radiator protection. It seems sufficient for going down off road at the speeds I travel.

Don't say sorry for questions, that's why were all here!!

Great bike and nicely outfitted. The only eye raising mod I found was the K&N air filter. Supposedly it has a pretty bad rep on this and other sites. It has been found that the UNI air filter is a superior product in more than a few peoples HO.

I had not read that anywhere. I can not say either way, besides that I am satisfied with the upgrade from stock to K&N. I will give the UNI a try someday and compare. Thanks for the input!

YouTube does it. It offered to do it automatically and I agreed...

I am not sure how I feel about it... It warps things a lot...

Cleghorn trail is in California. South of Barstow, just below Hesperia.

I'll agree with that one. I too was initially looking at a K&N air filter, but for being an aftermarket filter, supposedly the stock filter actually flows better. I cant tell you why or how, but I can tell you there was data claimed to support the UNI having significantly better flow than K&N. I dont think the consensus was that K&N was "bad" but rather just a waste of money.

It would be nice of you guys to post some actual info to support your posts, instead of just conjecture. As I understand it, from your posts, neither one of you have used both? It is not even clear if either of you use UNI. I understand we are all here to show off our bikes and give our opinions, but it's not clear if either one of you are even giving that. IMHO having had both a stock and a K&N on my KLR, I can say that I like the K&N. Other opinions are welcome, but hearsay is not fair.

I own a UNI filter, and will give two reasons for doing so.
1. The K&N filter was over twice the price, at over $50
2. I have discussed the two filters with Eagle Mike and Glenn, and both offered data (which I no longer have) about the flow rates of the K&N vs. the Uni, indicating the K&N was not an improvement over stock on the KLR650...likely a great product in other applications, nothing against them as an organization...but an inferior product for the KLR vs. the stock and the UNI.
Like I said...I love your setup...just send Eagle Mike a PM and ask for some insight...if you are interested.
Now everyone play nice.

Haha, please do not misunderstand. I was not agreeing or disagreeing. Just saying posters should have a bit more than 3rd party opinion, that's all. Anything I post, I try to have a valid reason for that opinion, or personal experience. It its only fair to the manufacturer. Are the UNI reusable like the K&N?

Yes. I bought a spray can of UNI cleaner and a spray can of UNI filter oil, and a spare UNI (all for less than a K&N...sorry, couldn't resist).
Simple, standard process of spray with cleaner (well ventilated area, or you start hearing colors and seeing sound...don't ask), wring out, let dry.
Spray with light coat of oil, allow to penetrate, wring out, wipe down, put in plastic bag in tank bag, put the "rested" one on the bike, ride and repeat.
I've cleaned mine about four times, still have plenty of cleaner and oil in said spray cans, and no issues with them breaking apart (but then again I don't clean it with gasoline), fits over the plastic stock filter frame as well.

Has anyone put that IMS 10 gallon tank on with the SW Motec crash bars?
I've heard they might not fit?
