Hi, I am from Chicago area, just saw another guy join as well from the south burbs. Haven't found anywhere yet. I plan to go ride where I used to offroad an old pickup but I will wait till it gets warmer.

Hey rip-rock...been enjoying the klr a lot. I will ride down to the upper 20's for short distances.I even road last friday in the snow just to see how the bike would do. It actually did well, as long as you didn't brake!

I started riding at 8. Never had my own bike until 18, it was a used 1982 Honda XL250 Enduro. Then got a used 82 Suzuki GS 650, also bought a 1986 Honda ATC 200S 3-wheeler (remember them?) then a used 1989 Suzuki Katana 600, then a 1995 Suzuki RF600R (My first new bike), then a new 1997 Suzuki Bandit 1200----that one got totaled from a tornado knocking a tree on it!! I replaced it with a new 1999 Bandit 1200, which I did a lot of mods to and finally traded it with 34,500 SMILES on it for the New KLR650. I am now 36, and haven't been without a bike since 18. What a great hobby/sport it has been.

All that and have only crashed 3 times once at 8 (should have killed me, but didn't), once on the Katana (was hit head on by a pickup, and walked away from it!! I literally flew over the truck and landed in a ditch filled with water! And once on the RF600R when an idiot pulled out right in front of me in a big van. (only suffered a few bruises in that one). I enjoyed the speed and brute power of the Bandits, but I have always wanted another Enduro and traded in the speed for a different kind of fun!

funny how ya remember the crashes ,had a 75 xl250 (bought it $800. had under 200miles onit but was stored indoors for 14 yrs). lots of tork rode it the longest learned the art of tail lite assembly repair & learned not corrordinated enough to do wheelies (& cardnil sin to armorall seats).drop/fell off that one the most. i quess i have a laid back phylosphicy to riding cause of that .don't race, don't realy drink, don't show off , if out wth the bike .keeps the vinel side up and the rubber side down.saw somewere i think here " RIDE IT LIKE IT OWES YOU MONEY" funny.

I live in the area too - kinda, out in Elgin which is about half way to Rockford. Not on the site too much because I have been out riding!

We should do a group ride sometime

Yes!

There's a guy in Clinton Iowa that I "talk" to, Toddsklr, and he mentioned a dual sport, adv, tour coming up Sept 20,21 in Sterling. The route is both on- and off-road and is 100 miles each day, food provided on the course, and basic camping facilities for the nights. Will post the link and description later this weekend.

I am in North Liberty Iowa (Iowa City area) and I hoping to get in on a tour/ride/distance/on-road/off-road/trip.

Let me know if there is any planned for the end of 2008 or the begining of 2009.

THANKS-

I'm located in Glendale Heights. Have an '08 Blue KLR. Haven't done much riding but I'm heading to The Cliffs on Tuesday with some fellow classmates.

Hey MarineTaco, I have never heard of The Cliff's before, I googled it, and will have to try it out. I live very close to you in Bloomingdale. I have seen a blue 08 before around here, probably was you.

I have the Green 08, knobbies, crash bars, lots of scratches!

I have gone several times this year to Fox Valley Offroad in Ottawa. I know of a few places to ride around our area as well.

I have a friend who just got a black '09 KLR, we will definately have to get a ride together next year.

I hear your pain. I'm originally from the Chicago suburbs, most lately from Elgin and it's darn near impossible to ride anywhere without the cops interrupting the fun. We used to ride in the quarry off Bluff City Blvd in Elgin but the cops would always show up eventually. I live in Minnesota now and guess what, OHV trails!!! Yes, you may ride off road on real trails! I love it here.
A lot of the trails are restricted to 4 wheelers (kiddy cars) but there are some that allow motorcycles and they are a gas. The tree huggers would like to close them all of course but there are plenty of places to ride. Look up the Minnesota DNR and bring your best Mosquitto repellant.

I live in Iowa about 10min on level-B roads from the Lakeview OHV park and its awesome - it is really lakeside as well and part of the park lets you ride on the beach right down by the water. Everyone has nicknamed the place 600acres but i thinks its more like 300.

The best part is that its only $15per year to get tags for all my bikes and the best one in the state is right down the street - i think there is 9 total in the state.

You can check out the website at https://www.iowaohv.com/.

If anyone wants to come down and ride we will show you around...

What does that mean? There is no gay marriage in Iowa - you must be thinking of another ultra-liberal state.

Just a wisecrack. It was in the news and it seemed funny at the moment.
