Default My 1st KLR Day Ride & 1st Off Road

On Saturday, May 30, I set out on my first real ride of my new Black 2007 KLR650. Went for the whole day and did my first off road riding, ever.

You can see all the pics and read the whole report here
https://www.westcoastmagnas.com/klr650/klr_1st_ride.htm
it's kinda long, so I won't post the whole thing here, but below is the "headline" version.

Rode 40 street minutes to get into the Sierra foothills

Stopped in Coulterville to see the Harley riders already drinking in the town saloon and by a box lunch to take into the hills.

Turned onto Dogtown Rd and found my first dirt and gravel

Learned and practiced my off road "skills" on Dogtown and Schilling (to many ranch gates)

Back to street, rode the good twisties of HWY 49 (little dragon) between Coulterville and Mariposa. KLR did a good job and was fun on this road too.

Back to dirt on BLM road, looser dirt, rocks (real rocks), washouts and sucky dry hard ruts. Stll fun. Stayed on the BLM road all the way to the restricted area close to the shoreline on the back (untravelled) side of Lake McClure.

Then on to Hunters Valley Rd - mix of single lane street and "groomed" dirt.

Downgrading (road condition wise, not fun wise) to Cottonwood Rd. Started with the gates again and immediately came across a dry creek crossing that went well. Then met some bovine's with VERY large horns and we argued about who got the road.

Then came across my first water filled creek crossing (which I was trying to avoid on my first adventure ever). And for a 1st time I thought about backtracking to Hunters Valley again, but I went for it, and it wasn't all good. (The Story of my 1st Creek Crossing)

Was mad, but 3 minutes later was grinning like a fool.

Took a slow long route home to enjoy the end of a fun day.

And that concluded my first KLR adventure.
See all the pics and read the whole report
(This will probably be my only full report ever)

Things I learned:

  • Avoid roads with lots of gates if possible
  • Avoid dry, deep ruts whenever possible - cause they suck
  • Buy bash plate and engine guards ASAP, follow up with hand guards (may save me from broken pinkies)
  • More storage for more tools and get out of trouble stuff (tool tube or Agristar thingy)
  • People stare at motorcycles and riders that appear to be soaking wet and really dirty
  • Water crossings - stop, look, make a plan (and maybe try a different route)
  • I'm outta shape - to much huffing and puffing while standing in the water
  • Think about getting that Spot tracking/help thingy if you're gonna ride alone
  • I could really start liking this whole adventure riding thing

A month ago when I was shopping for used KLR's - it came down to almost identical prices for almost identically setup bikes (essentially stock) - picked the Black over the Red. (and before I get hate mail, I like the Red too.)

Where next? First to the motorcycle shop (or internet) for:
a replacement clutch hand lever
maybe a new shift foot lever (depending on whether I can bend it back or not)
a skid/bash plate
engine guard, nerf bars, crash guard, whatever it's called

With that complete, I think I'll head for Cherry Lake Rd. (in the Cali Sierras) and enjoy some to the fire roads and trails I've seen up there (while riding by on my street bike)
