Default SgtMarty tech day, May 8, 2010 (new date)

For any of you who will miss Mountain's DAG tinker day on April 10th, there's hope yet.

I'll host my next KLR tech day on Saturday, April 24, 2010

NEW DATE: MAY 8th, 2010

Anytime afer 8 AM is fine. I'm not planning on cooking this time, so it'll be pizza or whatever people bring along.

Here's the details and directions:

https://sgtmarty.com/SgtMarty-KLR650-Tech-Day.html

That means I have two weeks to get Laurie's KLR motor back together and get the garage cleaned up (to some degree...).

After this tech day, I'll get my own KLR motor swapped out and fix a few other things before Laurie and I ride to the Yukon in June.

Link to directions are in the first post.

Laurie's KLR is running fine, so that's done. Starting to do some re-working on mine now.

Anyone seen or heard from Phlyin' Phil lately? Is he back from his ride to Panama?

Nope, you were the one who had responded.

Should be a few people there at this point. There were 32 bikes there last time (in '08, just before I left for South America). It'll be a tad more casual this time, I expect.

I started to replace my motor yesterday, but the POS engine botton that I got "cheap" on eBay turned out to be damaged. If the next motor (and various other parts) don't arrive and get installed in time, you can all laugh and point at the bare frame of my KLR.

It was fun running into you, Laurie, and Don at the Pan Asian the other night. I'd love to come to the tech day. Will the right tools be there to do the doohickey on my 09 KLR? Also, do you recommend the regular spring or the torsion one from Eagle Mike?

dashek, my post was poorly worded. Eagle Mike carries two types of springs for the doohickey, one that is like the original and one that is a different design. I was wondering which of Eagle Mike's springs you all would recommend.

No your post wasn't poorly worded. The superior part line is an inside joke from a previous tech day. I still believe the torsion spring is the better design. I think I am the proud owner of the only torsion spring to ever fail.

Caymen8, I have all the tools for the doo job, and if you don't have a doohickey on hand already, I have one in stock to sell you. I don't have a spare torsion spring, though. I do recommend the torsion spring, BTW. The jacked-up motor that I had gotten on ebay had a broken stock doo spring, too. If the torsion spring breaks (not likely), at least the parts should be trapped.

Mike's doo kits come with two springs to give you a choice of which one you need, depending on how stretched your balancer chain is. New bikes usually only need the longer spring, but the shorter spring will have a longer service life as the chain stretches.

Dashek--you had a torsion spring fail? What happened? If you posted it somewhere, I missed it. Did it break? Does Mike know?

Here is the discussion about the broken spring, Mike never commented and I didn't push because as someone pointed out it could have been an install error.

You were at the Tech Day at Randy's when I did the Doo. I don't recall if there was anything mentioned in the instructions about cutting a groove because I never really looked at them. There was enough experience that I didn't feel the need to RTFM.

Ah, I see the broken spring discussion now. The last few doo kits I've done have all had the groove milled into them. Also, I see some recommendations to drill the hole for the spring at the 5:30 position instead of the 7:00 position. The last one I helped with had the hole drilled too close to the shaft, and that also added to the spring's tendency to not lay flat.
