Default "There and Back Again" a Medics Tale

So I figured it was time to get the ride report started since I leave in 2 days.

The Plan:
Head South, then West, then North then South and East to get home again.

The Real Plan:
I have September 11-30th 2010 off from work and want to make the most of it. I plan to leave home (Lakewood, Colorado) and head south into NM then go East to Arizona, California, Baja, then follow the Left (Pacific) coast all the way up California and Oregon into Washington, then come home through Idaho and Wyoming by way of Yellowstone.

I will be taking the laptop with me and hoping to keep up with postings. I promise to keep it picture HEAVY! I also have a SOPT Messanger with me that I will use nightly to keep my wife happy. The link to the last 7 days of SPOT posting is Here: https://share.findmespot.com/shared/f...TkRmJvEZF8maea

This is the google map I will be kinda working from. I reserve the right to make changes frequently and yes I know it is not finished yet. Feel free to tell me about can't miss areas when I am near them.
Link: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...590576&t=h&z=7

Here is a picture of my 1993 KLR that will take me on the ride!

Any questions?

Stay tuned for 3000+ miles of fun!

If you have some off roading planned, you may want to take a spare clutch lever at least, and maybe a brake too

What kind of tires you running? Are those knobbies going to make the 3000 mile trip, or do you have an alternate plan?

I got to remember to call you if I break down and your in the area, looks like you got the parts/tools covered.

Ride safe and when in Cali let us know if you need some help.

Default Day 1 9/11/2010

So I got going today and am glad to finally be off! I had a great 1st day and did 273 miles today. I had a slow start leaving at noon because it took me a while to do my final gear check and I had to mow the lawn so my wife won't need to worry about it. Although in 3 weeks it will get pretty long.

I had to spend some time saying goodbyes to the wife. This proved to be harder than I though given that we have never spent this much time apart before. Still pretty much newlyweds. She cried as I left. I love you bay!

Ready to go!

I set out of Denver with the goal of making Lake City today. I relized that I had to stop a this big hotdog for luch. I had not been to the big hot dog since it was in Aspen Park. Now it has been relocated several miles west of it's old location. It was nice to see it remodeled, it was looking pretty sad when I saw it last in the old location.

Stopped by South Park Colorado for you fans of the show (Vickie)! The real town is a restored old west town from 1880 and is part of Fairplay. I see Kenny!

Goofy grin shot.

One of my goals on this trip was to get my bike on a beach. I was surprised I already go a chance on my 1st day.

The ride today was great with a healthy dose of twisty mountain roads, high passes, and changing aspen trees.

This is Ray the Chief of my department. I ended the day at his summer cabin south of Lake City. He and his wife were nice enough to keep me off the ground for the night and feed me better than I ever expected. A great steak with all the trimmings was my reward.

This was the 1st time I had seen his cabin. This is one of his 3 homes. Yes his garage is made of 8" logs. His house near me is only worth about 2 million and he also has a condo on the gulf coast. It seems being a hi level executive with IBM for many years had it's rewards. He and his wife Becky are both great people and I have never had a better boss.

I asked this on the main thread too. But I was thinking of going over Engineer pass tomorow and wanted to know if I would have problems. I have never been on it before and don't know what to expect. How bad is it going from Lake City to Ouray or Silverton? I am loaded pretty heavy causing the concern. Thanks for any advice.

Default Day 2 189miles 9/12/10 Finishing Colorado

So I left Ray's today with a full belly again. Ray and Becky's hospitality is 2nd to none! I set out for Engineer Pass and had a great ride getting back into Lake City.

After talking to a local in Lake City I decided to do Cinnamon Pass instead since she said it would be the easier of the two.

Things were going well and I was having a blast on the terrain until I felt the back of the bike get lighter?
Notice anything missing?

I found this a few hundred feet back. It seems my last minute modification to my rear box that would allow me to remove it was a little weak. Gonaa need to go back to the drawing boards on that one.

Fixed!

A little further up the trail I was waived over for lunch by these two.

That is Michelle and Christy we had met further back on the trail when I offered to take a picture for them and once again when my box fell off. They offered both good conversation and they happened to have my favorate chocolate. I had two and took one for the road. Michelle was driving this nice little 68 Willys.

Some more sights from Cinnamon

I made it to Silverton and found some cool cars to look at.

This was my favorite

I ended the night in the 4 corners area and needed a place to sleep. I went to the 4 corners monument that had signs for camping and was told there is no camping there. I asked where I could camp and was told there was no camping for 250 more miles. LOL. So I skipped the $3.00 fee for the tourist trap and set out in search of a place to lay my head. I did as I have done before. I rode off keeping my eye open for a side road off the beaten path to explore and search for a camp spot. I had only driven a mile or two when I found a wire gate on the side of the road. There were no posted signs so I went through. It was obvious no one had been in here for a long time based on the lack of any tracks. I found a spot out of sight of the public and set camp. Turns out it was a great spot and I was treated to an amazing sunset.

I had a hard time finding a flat peice of ground to put the tent on so I just put it on the trail confident no one would be comming.

Default Day 3 319miles 9/13/10 Arizona and the Canyon

While packing up camp this morning I was promptly evicted by the lord of this land. A shepard dog and his flock were not happy to find me. The dog was barking and advancing on me keeping himself 1/2 way between me and his flock. I packed as fast as a could and made a speedy departure before his master found me. LOL

I set out accross the desert for the grand canyon. I did stop for breakfast at a small gas station and made friends with these 2 after offering them a little of my sandwich.

I also spoke for a while to Gale the store manager on her smoke break. Seems she is fills the part time roll of local EMS in this area. She told me how she puts tea bags on wounds till the amulance comes from 1 1/2 hours out. Tea bags was a new one on me. She said it helps with clotting?

Looked at the canyon but left the t-shirts in the gift shop. Got my wife a necklace from one of the Navajo roadside stands though. (shhh dont tell her)

me and my shadow

Ended the day by finding another hidden camp spot. This time I followed a railroad access road back to this spot.

Mmmm Soups on!

Default Day 4 306miles 9/14/10 Heat Heat and more Heat

What a scorcher today was. I have never been that hot. I was trying everthing to keep cool but little helped. It was like standing under frenchfry lights in front of hairdryers all day. I got to ride through a ton of little desert towns that the world seems to have forgot. Cool sights. I spent the day among cacti, jashua trees, dunes, and huge dust devils. After this one I was happy to end the day in a hotel in Calexico and get a shower. I would have crossed into Mexico today but the bike is not insured until tomorow. So I walked over to Mexicali to see the sights and get dinner. I left with a soso couple tacos but was not all that impressed with Mexicali. I hope to find better when I get deeper in.
